The Mountain Velebit
A world of silence, freshness and scent of vegetation, shrouded in brutal romatics of mountain scenery.
The beauty of Velebit is sometimes wild and cruel: sun is suddenly followed by rain, wind rushes from the mountain inland with no warning at all, scorching summer heat on its littoral slopes melts down the rocks, a rare flower delights in the morning sunshine. Velebit stands silent as someone too special, an entitiy with character, like a giant human stature simultaneously joining and separating two such different landscapes: Lika, green, juicy, abundant in waters, fields and hills, Primorje, stony, rich in plants flogged by the bura and flowering under the sun, and the Adriatic Sea sprinkled with the islands. Lika, Velebit and Primorje make a magnificent triad to which the Velebit Mountain is a quiet and dignified spiritual hub.
Stretching in a total length of more than 145 kilometers, Velebit ranges in width from 30 kilometers in the north to 10 kilometers in the south.
The tops of Northern and Middle Velebit, from Zavižan to Baške Oštarije, are connected by 50 kilometers of mountain trail "Premužićeva staza" named after its initiator and architect Ante Premužić who began with the building of a path in 1930 which lasted 3 years. Difference in height between the highest and lowest point along its whole length is only 200 meters. By lovely hairpin-bends made of stone, drystone walls, half tunnels and tiny bridges the trail passes through the most savage and inaccessible Velebit's karst, and for these features as well as for its perfect integration into the surrounding lanscape it can be proclaimed a masterpiece of architecture, justifying its reputation as educational path through the International Biosphere Reserve.
The highest concentration of the most impressive sights on Velebit is localized at its norhern part, between the mountain passes of Vratnik and Veliki Alan.
Here is Zavižan with its special botanical reserves and the Botanical garden, representing a collection of living exhibits of vegetation on Velebit.
Štirovače is a longitudinal rocky field located at about 1,100 m altitude and surrounded from each side by mountain steeps overgrown with forest. At its bottom, Štirovače prides in its abundant juniper forest which is famous for its size and the grandiosity of the trees as one of the most beautiful coniferous forests in Croatia.
The Paklenica National Park spreads on the southern slopes of the Velebit range at an area of 96 hectares. Its most attractive sights are the deep gorges of Velika and Mala Paklenica whose vertical cliffs amount to more than 400 m in height, rendering Paklenica the world known rock-climbing destination. The Paklenica National Park presents a challenge to any nature lover: hiker, mountaineer, alpinist, adventurer...
The villages in the Velebit mountain foothills are simply enchanting by their simplicity and serenity. Krasno, renowned religious and mountain center, and Kuterevo, picturesque and idyllic villages in Lika. Nurturing of old, almost extinct crafts, carpentry (the making of chairs, wooden jugs, rods, etc), folklore, hospitable hosts with home made cheese and excellent brandy "šmirkovača" that by its fine rosin and mountain air daze the visitors' mind and body.
And as if this all does not suffice, an encounter with a little bear amid Velebit, at the Kutarevo refuge, will complete your Velebit story.
